Plas Brondanw Gardens - A hidden gem of Welsh garden art

The Plas Brondanw Gardens in Penrhyndeudraeth, Wales, are among the most beautiful and artistically challenging gardens in Great Britain. They were designed by the famous architect and landscape designer Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, who is best known for creating the Italian-inspired village of Portmeirion. The gardens of Plas Brondanw are considered one of his masterpieces and are an outstanding example of the harmony between architecture, landscape, and garden design.

Historical background
Plas Brondanw has been the family seat of the Williams-Ellis family since the 16th century. Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, born in 1883, inherited the estate in 1908 and devoted his life to designing the gardens. Inspired by the classical garden art of Italy and the natural beauty of Snowdonia, he transformed the grounds into a spectacular composition of terraces, sculptures, hedges, and water features.

The design of the gardens was a lifelong project for Williams-Ellis, and he considered Plas Brondanw to be his most personal work. His goal was to emphasize the natural beauty of the surroundings and create a connection between architecture and landscape. The gardens are a testament to his aesthetic understanding and his commitment to preserving the Welsh landscape.

Design and special features
The gardens of Plas Brondanw are characterized by a structured, geometric design reminiscent of Italian Renaissance gardens, but perfectly integrated into the wild beauty of Snowdonia. Williams-Ellis created a series of garden rooms separated by hedges, walls, balustrades, and stairs, but harmoniously blending into each other.

Notable features of the gardens include:
- Terraced gardens bordered by low stone walls offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
- Formal boxwood hedges forming symmetrical patterns and providing the gardens with a clear structure.
- Stone ornaments and sculptures, including mythological figures and ancient statues placed throughout the garden landscapes.
- Water features and ponds creating a peaceful, meditative atmosphere.
- Flower beds and exotic plants in perfect contrast to the strict architectural forms of the garden layouts.

Especially impressive is the main axis of the garden, which opens up a spectacular view of the peaks of the Snowdonia National Park. These sightlines are intentionally designed to integrate the natural landscape into the garden's design.

Significance and cultural heritage
Plas Brondanw Gardens are not only an example of exceptional garden art but also a significant cultural heritage of Wales. Williams-Ellis passionately advocated for the preservation of the Welsh landscape and was an early proponent of conservation and sustainable development.

The gardens reflect his aesthetic and philosophical approach, emphasizing beauty, harmony, and respectful interaction with the environment. They are considered a kind of "little Portmeirion," as many of the design elements used there originated here.

Today, the Plas Brondanw Gardens are an important part of Welsh cultural heritage and attract visitors who want to experience the unique combination of architecture, garden art, and nature.

Conclusion
The Plas Brondanw Gardens are an impressive example of creative garden design and a significant legacy of Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. They combine classical elements with the wild beauty of the Welsh landscape, offering a unique experience for lovers of gardens, architecture, and natural beauty. Their interplay of structured garden rooms, artistic details, and breathtaking views make them one of the most beautiful gardens in Wales and an unforgettable destination for visitors.

Enjoyed the gardens on a cold sunny January day. We were the only visitors there at the time. The light snow covering made the gardens very special

We first visited Plas Brondanw many years ago and instantly loved the feel and location of the gardens - it was an obvious choice when we came to select a wedding venue! The Orangery was the perfect setting for our wedding ceremony and the gardens were the ideal setting, both for our wedding photographs and for our guests to stroll and enjoy. Lowri and her team were extremely helpful, friendly, and provide excellent tea and cake in their wonderful cafe! We couldn't have hoped for more warm and accommodating hosts for our wedding day. A place we will continue to visit regularly!

Splendid and quirky (in a good way), home of Clough Williams-Ellis, maybe you need to know who he is to best appreciate the house. The mild and damp climate ensures a green and pleasant garden which is run separately.

The gardens are picturesque, serene and presents a photo opportunity everywhere you look. The original house is beautiful and the staff at the cafe are welcoming and the food is beautiful. The walk to the tower near the carpark is beautiful with breathtaking views.

We made this visit purely because of it's connections to being used for filming in the Dr Who episode "the five doctors" Several scenes were filmed in this magnificent place with connections to the portmeirion estate being the home of the chap whom built portmeirion. The gardens are lovely and were used for the scene where the first doctor is captured by the time scoop. Even if you're not a Dr Who fan, this place is well worth a visit as the house and gardens are magical! Across the road and up a steep hill you reach the plas brondanw tower which was given as a wedding gift. This tower served as the main backdrop to the scenes in the "the five doctors" as the eye of orion. Again, a very magical place and it's isolation really does give off those 'alien planet vibes' The creep grotty is a little further down the hill. Check it out! There are accesible toilets, a lovely house to see and a tearoom.

Very nice house, knowledgeable staff who gave history of the house. Lovely stopover for lunch. Clean toilets in the main house which was free. We did not go to the gardens but from the house, the views looked great.

A haven of colour and serenity with the backdrop of Snowdonia (and arguably it's best views). The gallery changed 7 times a year, always a reason to come back. We even came away with a painting that typifies the garden at Plas Brondanw. Oddly, we were going to go to Portmerion for the first time today but the weatherade is hold off. Visiting here was the perfect introduction. Many thanks to the staff who clearly love their jobs and to the gardener, blonde, smiley who took time out of his day to point out the individual mountains in the distance and to share some walks with us.

As a wedding photographer I absolutely adore Plas Brondanw Gardens. It provided the perfect backdrop for our couples intimate weddings. The blend of North Welsh charm and tranquil beauty created an unforgettable atmosphere. We just posted a wedding on our blog featuring a ceremony in the gardens in March and it's just the perfect spot. Highly recommend for couples seeking a picturesque venue.

Evocative. A way of life less traveled perhaps yet insightful into the Williams-Ellis family. Sit awhile in contemplation under the Evergreen Oak and simply observe.
